This impressive Kord Bidjar kilim is a study in blue worthy of Gainsborough himself. The design alternates between broad bands of cornflower and midnight blue, each divided in half by darker sewn embellishment. The bands themselves are woven with considerable variation in tone or ‘abrash,’ which imparts a sense of depth a space to the design. The rhythmic effect of the alternation in tone has a certain interest, but ultimately it is the color itself – the pure beauty of these various shades of blue – that produce the enormous artistic presence of this piece.
