Kurdish Pelas
Despite the softness of the hues, the color of this antique Kurdish Pelas is absolutely superb. The design is apparently predicated on broad alternating vertical bands of cool tan and soft ochre yellow, each subdivided by additional over stitching in dark brown. But within either color is a world of subtle variegation or ‘abrash’ resulting from the careful and adroit mixing of different shades. This blending produces an illusion of depth and space that’s so well complemented by the tactile quality of the weave itself. A classic example of the sophistication behind the immediate simplicity of tribal weaving.
