The antique Donegal carpets produced in Ireland often have designs of medieval Celtic origin as part of the Arts and Crafts Movement in the British Isles at this time. But some, like this striking example, represent an Irish approach to the large-scale floral designs of Persian Sultanabad or Turkish Oushak carpets. Here the field design consists of overlapping strap work vines supporting large palmettes alongside smaller flowering branches. Though large in scale the pattern is relatively open and airy. Palmette vine-scrolls make up the main border with geometric minor borders as framing outlines. But despite the oriental inspiration, the distinctive Irish or European quality still emerges in the drawing and the lovely palette of soft salmon, blue, and green tones.
