Kuba rugs from the northeast Caucasus are the finest and most precisely woven examples of the region. The basic lattice format of the field is typical, although this one, with its sequential hexagons formed by thin, serrated leaves is more unusual, as is the pale ivory or white ground. The lattice is filled by alternating horizontal rows of red flower heads and fine shrubs. In place of a large main border, this example has six finely wrought minor borders, which nicely complement the small-scale repetitions of the field design.
