The antique Heriz carpets made in the Northwest of Persia are famed for their bold, graphic adaptation of classical medallion designs transformed by a crisp geometric drawing played off against rich, sumptuous color. But rarely do they achieve these effects with the masterful panache that we see in this lavish example. Here a monumental olive green medallion reigns supreme, balanced by salmon corner-pieces and a clear red field in between. Within all these areas, bold yet elegant vines and palmettes just across the surface, articulating the interplay of salmon, red, and olive with sparing use of dark navy for graphic emphasis. A classic Heriz ‘turtle’ vinescroll border frames the field, echoing its red ground, but rendered in a finer scale for graphic contrast. The beauty of the color and the design are matched by the lovely wool of the pile.
