A design of classical Caucasian inspiration graces this outstanding antique Serapi. In the field we see a striking ‘Karadashli’ pattern of richly articulated palmettes and ‘Harshang’ motifs in ivory, gold, terracotta, and blue, all linked together by sprays of flowering vines. The depth of color in the red field is extraordinary, providing the ideal setting or foil for the palette of the various palmettes. A ‘turtle’ vinescroll border frames the field, set against a soft gold ground for contrast. The drawing is classic Serapi – animated, spontaneous, and crisply geometric, yet somehow perfect for the classical motifs and overall design.
