This incomparably beautiful antique English needlepoint represents the expression of the Arts and Crafts Movement in the carpet medium. Reminiscent of the medieval-inspired designs of William Morris and Christopher Dresser, the field consists of an allover pattern of pointed quatrefoils inscribed within circular medallions. Each of the interior sections is filled in turn with lush ornamental patterns of flowers or flowering vines in shades of red, lavender ivory, and green. Smaller lobed medallions fill the areas between the large round ones, all against a dramatic black ground with leafy filler motifs. Multi-lobed cartouches repeat in series as the main border, linked by a mesh of curling, leafy vinescrolls on a black ground like the field. Some of the cartouches are inscribed with monograms. The grace and precision of the drawing and the rich yet reserved palette must be seen in person to be appreciated fully.
